Genesis – «In the beginning was what?*»

Interactive stations in the art lab

Sat 26 January – Sun 27 April 2008
Free admission

Fri 25 January 2008, 19.30 – Opening
(on the occasion of the preview of the exhibition «Genesis – The Art of Creation»)

Visit the art lab to discover for yourself the exciting associations that exist between art and science. The focus is on the light-hearted exploration of what can be a complex issue: Genesis.
The concepts behind the interactive stations were developed as a joint venture between the Creaviva children’s museum and students from the Bern University of the Arts.

Station 1: Growing Cells (Sarah Hostettler)
Station 2: Designing / Discarding (Ursina Meier)
Station 3: Genesis – An Audio Project (Tim Leu)
Station 4: Short Films (Swiss Films, SF1, artist videos)
Station 5: Heart Chamber (Pascal Nater)
Station 6: Laboratory

The presentations in the art lab are complemented by depictions of the creation in music and literature.

Paul Klee kept comparing the creation of a work of art with the parallel process in nature. That is how to understand Genesis in art. In his 1923 essay «Wege des Naturstudiums» [Ways of studying nature] he discusses the development of perception, which was becoming ever more analytical. The tools used by Science shed light on smaller and smaller entities. Paul Klee declares that it is up to the artist to make use of this newfound knowledge in order to arrive at a «totalisation» («Totalisierung») of the creative process – in other words, to re-create something complete.
