The most extensive and important publication so far compiled from the archive is Klee's catalogue of works, the Catalogue raisonné Paul Klee.
This publication represents the first ever attempt to bring together and publish, completely and systematically, the work of Paul Klee. The Catalogue raisonné Paul Klee is the fruit of 15 years of scientific work – based on preparatory work in the 1970s and 1980s – on the oeuvre of Paul Klee, comprising some 10,000 drawings, prints, watercolours and paintings. By following Klee’s own handwritten catalogue of works, in which the artist unfailingly and meticulously recorded his artistic output from 1911 until his death in 1940, the Catalogue raisonné Paul Klee lists all the artist’s works in chronological sequence. This systematic approach does not artificially separate the body of work according to genres; instead it provides fundamental insights into the dynamic of Paul Klee’s method of work.
The project of the Catalogue raisonné Paul Klee was completed in autumn 2004 with the publication of the final volume. Volume 9 comprises the works of 1940 as well as an updated bibliography and an addendum and corrigenda; it has also been complemented with a complete index of work titles, provenances and locations.
The publication of the Catalogue raisonné was entrusted to the Bern publishing company Benteli-Verlag, which did not shy away from taking on the considerable publishing risk of such an expensive and of course also non-commercial production.
