Vasif Kortun (born November 6, 1958) is the Director of Platform Garanti Contemporary Art Center, Istanbul. He was the founding Director of Project Istanbul Museum of Contemporary Art (2001 - 2003), the chief Curator and Director of the 3rd International Istanbul Biennial (1992) and Co-Director with Charles Esche of the 9th International Istanbul Biennial(2005). Between 1994 and 1997 he worked as the founding Director of the Museum of the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College.
Jahresring 51: Szene Turkei: Abseits aber Tor, a book on the Turkish art scene co-authored with Erden Kosova was published in 2004. Kortun received the 9th annual award for Curatorial Excellence from the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College in 2006.
Vasif Kortun was the co-curator of the Taipei Biennial in 2008. Kortun was also one of the curators of the 24th Sao Paolo Biennial in 1998, Tirana Biennial, and 2nd Ceramics Biennial in Albisola, 2003. He curated the Turkish pavilions for the 1994 and 1998 Sao Paolo Biennials and the 2007 Venice Biennial for which he worked with artist Huseyin Alptekin.
Vasif Kortun is the director of Platform Garanti Contemporary Art Center in Istanbul. Upcoming projects in 2009 include exhibitions at The Experimental Art Foundation, Adelaide, Australia; Galerija Skuc, Ljubljana, Slovenia; and Les Ateliers Internationaux, Frac des Pays de la Loire, France. Kortun is presently editing a monograph on the late artist Hüseyin B. Alptekin. The co-curator of the 9th Istanbul Biennial in 2005 and the 2008 Taipei Biennial, Kortun received the 9th annual Award for Curatorial Excellence given by the Center for Curatorial Studies in 2006, and organized the Turkish Pavilion for the 2007 Venice Biennial.
