Maurice E. and Martha Müller Foundation

The Maurice E. and Martha Müller Foundation (MMMF) was established under private law at the same time as the definitive decision in favour of the Schöngrün site was reached at the beginning of november 1998.

Duties of the Maurice E. and Martha Müller Foundation
The Maurice E. and Martha Müller Foundation's mission is to sustain the legacy of Paul Klee by establishing both a museum dedicated to Paul Klee and a research facility at Schöngrün (Bern). To this end it erected a new building and ensurs its operation. In so doing the Maurice E. and Martha Müller Foundation assumed the main share of the responsibility for planning, conducting and financing the building of the Zentrum Paul Klee.

The Maurice E. and Martha Müller Foundation built the Zentrum Paul Klee on land that was in part donated by the Müller family and in part belongs to the City and the Canton of Bern, which ceded it to the Maurice E. and Martha Müller Foundation free of charge with the right to build. On completion of the Zentrum Paul Klee and the opening of the Centre on 20 June 2005 the Maurice E. and Martha Müller Foundation handed over the building to the foundation responsible for its operations (Stiftung Zentrum Paul Klee / Zentrum Paul Klee Foundation – SZPK).

The 125 million Swiss franc building was financed out of private funds. Approx. half of the amount has been donated by Prof. Maurice E. Müller and his wife Martha Müller-Lüthi. The lottery fund of the Canton of Bern contributed 18 million Swiss francs. Business and industry sponsors from Bern in particular and Switzerland as a whole contributed the rest of the amount.
