180,000 cubic metres of earth
In spite of the impressive dimensions of the three hills large sections of the Zentrum Paul Klee are actually situated on the underground floors. This fact is made clear by the 180,000 cubic metres of earth that have been moved since 15 October 2001, involving some 15,000 truck movements on the site, and by the 1,100 tonnes of steel girders, 1,000 tonnes of reinforcing steel and 10,000 cubic metres of concrete put into place.

Built in one piece
Usually buildings on the scale of the Zentrum Paul Klee are constructed in structurally independent sections, which are then interconnected using complex and expensive settlement joints. Since the concrete construction used for the Zentrum Paul Klee dispensed with settlement joints, which require regular maintenance, the entire structure was built in one piece. The only joints required were temporary shrinkage joints in a few places to minimise cracking while the concrete hardens.

Above-average insulating measures were used to protect the highly sensitive museum and stage areas.

Some 150 people from 18 countries have taken part in building work, and without exception they have worked with great commitment and outstanding results. The promoters wish to take this opportunity to express their warmest thanks to all of them.
