Schosshalden Cemetery is located in the immediate vicinity of the Zentrum Paul Klee. This is where Paul Klee and his family lie buried.
Following the consent given early in the year by Paul Klee’s descendants – his daughter-in-law Livia Klee and his grandson Alexander Klee – the artist's tomb was moved on 20 May 2005 in a quiet ceremony. It is now located at the foot of the vantage point called “Luft-Station” [Air-station] after a work by the artist. This is actually where Paul Klee’s remains were originally interred following his death in 1940: it was only in 1967 that his urn was buried in the family grave at the end of an avenue of chestnut trees in the northwest of the cemetery, not far from the old main gate – a spot which has become all too lonely of late.
Paul Klee’s final resting place is now not far from the Zentrum Paul Klee. It bears a simple bronze plaque with an inscription by him from 1920: “Diesseitig bin ich gar nicht fassbar. Denn ich wohne grad so gut bei den Toten, wie bei den Ungeborenen. Etwas näher dem Herzen der Schöpfung als üblich. Und noch lange nicht nahe genug” [“I cannot be grasped in this world. For I live now so well among the dead as among the unborn. Somewhat closer to the heart of creation than usual. Yet not close enough, by far”].
