Music at the Zentrum Paul Klee (Kaspar Zehnder, Music Director)
|
The music program is to play a key role at the Zentrum Paul Klee. The link between the fine arts and music is a central issue not just in the life and work of Paul Klee himself but also in the biography of the Müller and Klee founder families; it has therefore been incorporated as a key element in the fundamental concept of the Zentrum Paul Klee. The programs on offer at today’s music events are undergoing a fundamental change. And while music aficionados still account for the large numbers of traditional concert goers (who attend symphony, chamber orchestra and chamber music concerts), new consumer demands - particularly with regard to the form rather than the content of the events - also have to be taken into consideration. So while concert series and season tickets are still firm favourites, they appeal first and foremost by the older generation, with younger audiences seeking diversity, the “event experience”, an interdisciplinary approach, and also brilliance, in every respect. A new cultural centre therefore has to meet three new essential prerequisites: a clearly defined programming policy, a distinctive event profile and a high standard of quality. The “Music at the Zentrum Paul Klee” concept seeks to appeal equally to traditional audiences and to the new generation of music lovers, and to provide a binding link which again in the light of Paul Klee himself makes sense: Although Paul Klee influenced the music of his contemporaries and their successors through his pictorial, written and essayistic work like no other artist before him, he often expressed the belief that music had had its heyday. The red thread running through the music program will therefore be as follows: Music that Paul Klee enjoyed listening to and loved – Music from the time of Paul Klee – Music after Paul Klee. The resident Ensemble Paul Klee is to provide the nucleus and guarantee of music’s permanent presence at the Zentrum Paul Klee. Initially we are looking at a free association of eight to fifteen musicians (commissioned on a project basis) who identify with the Zentrum Paul Klee through a music program structured around Paul Klee. Experience will tell whether an ensemble with fixed contracts will subsequently develop with time. The primary function of the resident ensemble will not be to perform concerts; rather it will mediate the concept of music on site, always in co-operation with and in co-ordination with the other event areas at the Zentrum Paul Klee. The forum of exchange with ensembles of national and international renown (with emphasis on contemporary music) is important and also cost-effective for the reputation of the Zentrum Paul Klee and the City of Bern. High quality ensembles and chamber orchestras based in Bern (such as the Camerata Bern) are also to have regular engagements with the Zentrum Paul Klee and transfer their concert activities to the Zentrum Paul Klee. In such cases the Zentrum Paul Klee will assume the co-ordination work involved in drawing up the music program and schedule (to avoid any overlaps); a definite reference to Paul Klee will not be compulsory, and the responsibility for the profile and program policy will remain with the ensembles themselves. Key themes of the Zentrum Paul Klee will also be transposed musically to the City of Bern as a whole as part of regular co-productions, and also to the broader field of the various players involved in the capital’s music scene. The Zentrum Paul Klee is therefore attempting to find a common denominator for a period of time between the many institutions, organisers and musicians involved, and to pool the talent already on site to create an event with a great impact both within the Zentrum and outside it.
