21.03.2001

On 20 March 2001, the Foundation Board of the Stiftung Paul Klee-Zentrum appointed the present General Project Manager, Andreas Marti, to become the first director (Founding Director) of the Paul Klee Centre with effect from 1 August 2001.
|
By making this appointment, the Foundation Board has ensured that project work will continue to the present high standard of performance beyond the inauguration in the year 2005. The artistic director of the Paul Klee Centre will in all probability be appointed in the year 2002. The foundation which manages the Paul Klee Centre, i.e. the Paul Klee Centre Foundation is responsible as the supervisory body for the operation of the Paul Klee Centre, its financing and strategic decisions, including such matters as the appointment of the executives and senior officials. Following the vote by the citizens of the City of Bern on 4 March 2001 by a very large majority in favour of the construction of the Paul Klee Centre in Schöngrün (Bern), the next scheduled step was to elect Centre Director. The Foundation Board did not publish the vacancy. It took the view that, in the present situation, it would have been prejudicial to question established relations and smoothly functioning processes unnecessarily. In the person of Andreas Marti, the Foundation Board has appointed a Director who is ideally fitted to steer the Paul Klee Centre through its early phase – planning and construction, start-up and acceptance of operational responsibility. Andreas Marti, who has been directing the complex Klee project on a part-time basis since its inception in the summer of 1997 is the person who knows the project and its environment best; during this period, he has also given constant evidence of outstanding performance. After studying classical philology, ancient history and archaeology at the Universities of Bern and Vienna, Andreas Marti worked as a grammar school teacher and was headmaster of the German Grammar School in Biel for several years. He therefore has the necessary intellectual background and also a high teaching qualification. Because of the central importance attached to the multiplying function of the Paul Klee Centre, this is an important criterion for the future Centre Director. As Secretary General of the Education Directorate (Directorate for Education, Culture and Sport) of Bern Canton for many years, he also has extensive administrative experience and qualifications in the management of big projects and complex change processes. His activity will focus on preparation and opening of the centre, further development and implementation of the concepts for the different activity areas of the Centre and integration of the new institution into the existing museum landscape. This involves participation in the project on a “Holding structure for the Bern Museums of Pictorial Art.” An artistic director of the Paul Klee Centre is likely to be appointed next year. This procedure will enable the Foundation Board to devote the necessary care to finding the right person in good time. After appointing the artistic director, the Centre Director will give him the necessary freedom to concentrate fully on his core duties: presentation of the collection, temporary exhibitions and research.
