The Canton, City and Civic Community
of Bern as well as the Kunsthalle Foundation, are pursuing a common strategy for the Paul Klee Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art. The Paul Klee Museum takes priority in terms both of content and timing. As far as possible, the Paul Klee Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art are being planned as a single entity. For the potential “former Progymnasium” site, the maximum available space is known. The scale of the investment and operating costs has already been determined. This also applies to the total funding to be provided by private individuals. Other sites in the Schützenmatte perimeter up to Waisenhausplatz are being assessed by the Metron Planning Office. They must achieve at least the same facilities as the “former Progymnasium” site. All things being equal, a new building is preferred. The site decision is to be taken in September. Subsequent planning steps were decided as follows
- Decision on the site to be taken by the end of September 1998.
- Verification of the concepts, the operating requirements, the definitive development program and the financial background conditions by the end of September 1998.
- Agreement on the works, the concept, the development program, the operation and financing of the Museum of Contemporary Art by the end of September 1998. Inauguration of the international design competition in January 1999.
- Application for the project credit by the end of January 2000.
- Formation of the sponsorship body by the end of 2000.
- Application for a building credit by the end of January 2001.
If the site decision is taken in favour of the “former Progymnasium”, the requirements for the New School site will be decided by a special and separate procedure. The decision on this is to be taken in 1999. In that case, the schools must be able to move into their new site at the end of 2001.
