Goals and site development program defined and to be presented by end of year

30.08.1999

The Paul Klee Centre in the Schöngrün district of Bern is to be an active focus of cultural and scientific attraction with an international impact and also a place for meetings and leisure activities for the population of the district, region and canton. The preliminary design by the architect, Renzo Piano, and his Building Workshop will be presented to the public before the end of the year.

Goals
The Gesamtprojektausschuss Klee (Overall Project Committee – GPAK) responsible for running the Paul Klee Centre and the Maurice E. and Martha Müller Foundation (MMMF), which is in charge of the construction of the Paul Klee Centre, have adopted the objectives which will underpin the creation of the Paul Klee Centre in Schöngrün: the heart of the new museum is a link between art and research. But because central importance attaches to intermediation, modern means of communication and various intermediation programs are to be used. The intention of the Public Authorities and Founders is that the Paul Klee Centre should be run in a way which meets the highest standards of museum didactics and pedagogics and, through its activities, encourages different target and age groups to learn with pleasure. The Paul Klee Centre intends to organize the major collections which it brings together and places on display (40 per cent of the artist‘s life work) as a national and international platform for current artistic and scientific confrontation with the work of Paul Klee. The Paul Klee Centre is also to serve the population of the district, region and canton as a meeting place and leisure facility. At the same time, it will enhance the attractiveness of Bern for tourists. With services and facilities, such as an event area, a museum shop, a bookshop and a restaurant, the Paul Klee Centre also provides an attractive offer outside its opening hours.

Site development program

These goals are reflected in the Site Development program which was adopted simultaneously by the Gesamtprojektausschuss and the Board of the Maurice E. and Martha Müller Foundation. These program principles are used as the basis for further work by the Renzo Piano Building Workshop (RPBW). The exhibition area is defined to make ample space available for temporary exhibitions in addition to the presentation of the largely monographic permanent display. The program also provides space for individual work on the pictures (listening islands and reading corners). Outside the exhibition area, museum visitors are to have an opportunity for individual and, in particular, interactive consideration of Paul Klee and his artistic environment. Space will be made available here for activities such as concerts and academic events; the concept for running the centre will contain detailed proposals on this aspect.

Planning, development and preliminary design
The original idea of first submitting a master plan has been slightly modified. Renzo Piano and his colleagues are currently working on a preliminary design which will be ready for presentation to the public before the end of 1999. The fundamentals and concepts for planning and development will be defined in parallel and in close cooperation with Renzo Piano and his Building Workshop by the Bern City Planning Office. The presentation of the preliminary draft by the Gesamtprojektausschuss on which the Chairman, Cantonal Councillor Dr. Hans Lauri (Cantonal Finance Director), the Myor of Bern, Dr. Klaus Baumgartner, and the Chairman of the Civic Community, Dr. Kurt Hauri, are represented, together with the Board of the Maurice E. and Martha Müller Foundation (Chairman: former Cantonal Councillor Peter Schmid) will take place in the Kornhaus Bern.
