A fresh start in the new millennium

Most of the work carried out by Christine Hopfengart, curator from 2001 until the merging of the Paul-Klee-Stiftung [Paul Klee Foundation] with the Stiftung Zentrum Paul Klee [Zentrum Paul Klee Foundation] on 1 January 2005, focused on preparing the future broader activities as part of the Zentrum Paul Klee. Besides directing the final work on the Catalogue raisonné Paul Klee she also planned the transfer of the art collection and the archives to the Zentrum Paul Klee, expanded the existing network of partner institutions through a targeted policy of loans and exhibitions, and prepared new opportunities for future co-operation in the exhibition sector.

Another key tool was the completion of an image database, with high resolution digital photographs in facsimile quality of the pictures from the collections, the permanent loans and the works deposited with the Zentrum Paul Klee. The photographs were produced in co-operation with the Institute for Media Science at Basel University, and integrated into the existing database. As a result the Zentrum Paul Klee was now able to offer a broad spectrum of uses for visitor communication, research, restoration, and for the loan and sale of pictures.

Various projects were also initiated in the collection sector, including a Klee student archive, which uses oral history methodology to trace former students of Paul Klee and complements Klee’s own Pädagogischer Nachlass [Pedagogical Estate], and the Klee and Bern research project, which aims to retrace the life of Paul Klee and his family in Bern.

For half a century the Paul-Klee-Stiftung had been the main facility for updating, researching and mediating the work of Paul Klee. On 1 January 2005 the Zentrum Paul Klee took over the duties of the former Paul-Klee-Stiftung, which it now intends to continue and expand, with the new (and unchanged) objective of researching the multi-faceted work of Paul Klee and communicating it in a way that appeals lastingly to broad sections of the population interested in art and culture.
