Adapted layout design for public areas

The layout of public areas around the Zentrum Paul Klee is to be enhanced, with five specifically designed sites used to signal the proximity of the Zentrum Paul Klee.

Schosshaldenstrasse extended into an esplanade
Schosshaldenstrasse is to be extended by an esplanade along the Wyssloch, and remodelled as a special access thoroughfare to the Zentrum Paul Klee. People walking along the esplanade will have wonderful views of the Zentrum Paul Klee, the neighbouring districts and even the Alps.

North access: new square at the Undo-endo bridgehead
The junction of Schosshaldenstrasse, Melchenbühlweg and Insula dulcamara (formerly Friedhofweg) at the north entrance to the Paul Klee – known as the Undo-endo – is to be re-designed to reduce the volume of traffic.

Insula dulcamara without through traffic
Insula dulcamara is to be set back, relieved of through traffic, and separated from the motorway by a line of trees. Insula dulcamara is to be remodelled, along with the cemetery perimeter wall. The square at the Laubegg schoolhouse is also to be upgraded with two groups of trees and a larger traffic-free area.

Freudenbergerplatz/Giacomettistrasse: upgrading the south entrance
Another stated aim of the public authorities (City and Canton of Bern) is to upgrade the southern pedestrian access from Freudenbergerplatz via Giacomettistrasse. While initial ideas have been put forward, there are no concrete plans as yet.

Schritte für Klee [Steps for Klee] – The “picturesque” approach to the Zentrum Paul Klee
Pedestrian access is a key priority. A network of paths and roads with evocative names such as “es promeniert” [It promenades], “Familienspaziergang” [Family Walk], “nur auf Umwegen” [Only with Detours], “Teppich der Erinnerung” [Carpet of Remembrance] or “Wurm am Weg” [A Worm by the Wayside], will link the Zentrum Paul Klee with the old city centre of Bern to the west.

And we owe it to an initiative of the City of Bern Local Council that just under two dozen hitherto largely unnamed paths and streets in the area surrounding the Zentrum Paul Klee have been named after the titles of works by Klee.

After preliminary work by a three-member street-naming committee (Emil Erne, municipal archivist; Peter Betts, Head of the Cultural Affairs Department; Thomas Hardmeier, municipal surveyor), in 2002 the Bern Local Council decided to name 18 access paths and roads to the Zentrum Paul Klee after the title of works by the artist. The street-naming project by Bern’s Local Council is unique in its kind in Switzerland.

All 18 of Klee’s drawings, watercolours and paintings chosen for the names, an overview of the renamed streets and paths and information on the Zentrum Paul Klee can be found in the brochure entitled Schritte für Klee, published by the Bern Local Council together with the Maurice E. and Martha Müller Foundation and the Zentrum Paul Klee. The publication was reissued to coincide with the opening of the Zentrum Paul Klee on 20 June 2005.
