Transport: A clearly structured, eco-friendly solution

The weight of traffic in the district has been eased by implementing the relevant concept for the district’s development.

Involving district Representatives
The City of Bern Main Office for Planning and Construction drew up the transport solution for the development of the Zentrum Paul Klee in direct dialogue with the Schosshalde-Wittigkofen Transport Working Group of the City Area 4 district Representatives.

Public transport
Bus route 12 (direction Schosshalde/Zentrum Paul Klee) is to be extended as far as the north entrance of the Zentrum Paul Klee in time for the opening of the Zentrum Paul Klee in June 2005. The bus route, which also directly links the Unitobler Library, the University, the railway station, the business centre, the old city centre and the Bear Pit, will be even more attractive once it is extended as far as the Zentrum Paul Klee. In fact the section of the route through the old city centre and across the Muristalden to the Zentrum Paul Klee might well be referred to as a future sightseeing tour (“panorama route”).

With the tram terminus at Freudenbergerplatz (Tram No. 5, direction Ostring) and the bus routes 12 (direction Schosshalde/Zentrum Paul Klee), 10 (direction Ostermundigen) and 28 (direction Wankdorf Bahnhof) the Zentrum Paul Klee will be ideally integrated in the public transport network.

The Zentrum Paul Klee can be reached in only 10 minutes by public transport from Bern’s main railway station.

Cars and coaches
The most direct route for cars and coaches is from the Bern-Ostring motorway exit (A6). There will be 150 parking spaces, coach stands and a taxi stand in the immediate vicinity of the Zentrum Paul Klee.

Through traffic via Insula dulcamara (formerly Friedhofweg) and Schosshaldenstrasse is to be stopped to improve the residential quality in the district. An additional 50 parking spaces will be provided along the motorway embankment at Insula dulcamara to cover peak demand. The zoning regulations provide for a further 100 provisional parking spaces, which are to be removed again at a later date so that any potential rush of visitors during the first years of the Centre’s operations can be accommodated without burdening the adjoining districts.

The junction of Ostermundigenstrasse into Laubeggstrasse is to be widened (to include a left-turn lane and a bus lane). A new protected pedestrian crossing will lead from the Rosengarten exit to the Reiterstrasse district opposite.

Pedestrians and cyclists
A pedestrian and cycling lane is to be built along the main façade of the Zentrum Paul Klee, between Giacomettistrasse and Insula dulcamara, to provide a new north-south link. Although the main entrance to the Zentrum Paul Klee is from the north, the Centre will also be easily accessible from the south, i.e. from Freudenbergerplatz and the Schöngrün district.

Another footpath and cycling lane will run from the Schöngrün district through the grounds of the Zentrum Paul Klee to Waldegg.

Bicycle stands will be available in the immediate vicinity of the Zentrum Paul Klee.
